Comenius project 2009-2011 : A Ticket to EU Culture

(multilateral school partnership)

Partner schools:

Comenius students

Introduction

With this project, we want our students to be aware of the importance of knowing a foreign language in the 21st century, but at the same time we want them to appreciate that this is absolutely compatible with the preservation of our regional languages, histories and patrimonies (both cultural and natural). Preserving our cultural and natural heritage must be a priority if we want to offer something to our visitors. Our heritage makes us different from others, but at the same time it helps us to look towards the future knowing who we are, what we can offer the others and how we want them to appreciate it.

Our specific aim is to create a tourist guide for young people in those two years. The students create the different paragraphs throughout the years so that – at the end – all schools will have collected local information and put them together in one booklet. The booklet includes information about sights, traditional recipes, useful phrases and recommendations to guide you through the stay.

We will share our findings and results within our local communities and we hope our tourist guide will actually prove useful for the local tourist information centres.

Comenius students about the importance of cultural heritage:

Cultural heritage is a key player in defining a nation and it is as such of vital importance when one would wish to represent his nation's roots and its culture. Although some people are quite aware of its significance I daresay the attitude of the vast majority (especially among the youth) shows much disrespect toward it and tries to discredit it of its value and influence on what we are today (as a nation). As stated above cultural heritage represents our historic path and it therefore deserves to be preserved by all means necessary (to add a dramatic value to this issue). But reconstructive work isn't enough to keep the heritage alive – in order to really preserve it, more awareness of the historical value must be raised so that it can be appreciated for what it really is - not piles of old rocks but  proud achievements of a nation. If I were in charge of a tourist group I would surely show them some of the (in my opinion) more interesting historical sites in our area. Perhaps I would start with our school; nonetheless it is a 200 years old establishment. I would continue with the Celje's old castle, Necropolis of Šempeter, Žička Kartuzija. and so on and so forth. My goal would be to show the vast historical and cultural diversity that our land has to offer.                                                                               Rok Vahter

Cultural heritage is important because it allows us to keep on improving our knowledge and it is also a reminder of the past. The cultural heritage of a nation contains within it everything that represents that nation.

Some historical sites are not well protected and are thus commonly the targets of vandalism such as graffiti. One could of course argue that graffiti is in some way also a form of cultural heritage – it can reflect a social or political view from a certain era, and sometimes graffiti can be wonderful art. It is nonetheless sad that so many beautiful statues and buildings are defiled by vandals without such meaningful motive. And they are not the only ones causing damage. Many times, not enough effort and money are invested in the restoration of important historical sites. Sometimes they are abandoned altogether and left to slowly crumble.

Young people do not think much of cultural heritage. It is a fairly broad term and I do not think they are all aware of what is encompasses. And even if they do, I think many of them will simply ignore something if it is old, regardless of its quality or meaning. This way of thinking is rather unfortunate, since many artists, stories, paintings, songs etc. never get picked up only because of their age.                                                                                                     Jaka Javernik

Cultural heritage is important for many reasons. For example it is something that reminds us of the past and our roots. It tells us why things are the way they are and cultural heritage is a guarantee that some things won't be forgotten. Every single person should be proud of the cultural heritage in his city, village, country. But cultural heritage must become something that we really know it is important. We have to realize that it is the reason why we are here and if something changed things could be so much worse or sometimes even better. For this reasons statues, historic places, statues and artifacts must be preserved and maintained for future generations. Also we must build and create cultural heritage for next generations and at the same time we must look in the past and also into the future.                   Tomaž Mlinarič
